Pre-Retirement Seminars 2020-21

PLEASE NOTE: All sessions for the 2020-21 Pre-Retirements seminars are currently full. We regret that we are no longer able to accept any further applications at this time.

Members who are eligible to retire within two years of the expiry of the current school year (by June 2023) can register for one of the NLTA’s Pre-Retirement Seminars scheduled to be held this fall/winter. Due to COVID-19 and required precautions resulting from the ongoing Public Health emergency, the NLTA will be offering these seminars virtually in order to ensure the safety and protection of our members, staff and resource people.  This is in keeping with the Association’s position regarding health and safety measures in schools.

These seminars are in accordance with Association policy as part of its overall program of pre-retirement counselling. Clause 18.12 of the Provincial Collective Agreement and Clause 29.12 of the Labrador West Collective Agreement provide two days paid leave to attend these seminars.  As the sessions will be held virtually, travel will not be required and members can choose from any one of the available dates.

Information sessions deal with topics such as the Teachers’ Pension Plan, Severance Pay, Employment Insurance, NLTA Group Insurance, Financial and Estate Planning and the Canada Pension Plan.  As well, time will still be available for individual counselling of prospective retirees by the various consultants.

Read the full text of the NLTA Policy on Pre-Retirement Seminars located in the Policy Handbook of the NLTA (under Section IV, Subsection G). The NLTA policy will also be emailed to members with confirmation of registration.

  • Potential participants must register with the NLTA for a particular seminar and apply to their Board office for leave.
  • Only those members eligible to retire during or before June 2023 will be eligible to attend.
  • Registration should be received at the NLTA office at least four weeks in advance to ensure approval of attendance.
  • The Association reserves the right to refuse acceptance of registration at any particular seminar if registration has not been received at the NLTA office in accordance with Association policy.
  • Seminars will be offered using the Zoom virtual platform. Participants will need to be equipped to attend virtually and/or by teleconference. Packages with copies of slideshows, pension and insurance benefit statements and other materials will be mailed to members in advance of seminar dates. Members are welcome to reach out to do a “trial run” in advance of the session.
  • A partner is welcome to join the participating member at a virtual pre-retirement seminar.  Please ensure that you provide their name when you register.
  • Expenses, if incurred, such as meals, accommodation and dependent care, are the responsibility of the participating member.
  • A member participant shall be permitted to attend one seminar only (Notwithstanding this, a member may attend a second seminar as a partner).

Given the large number of members eligible to retire, we reserve the right to limit the number of people who will be granted access to attend each session. Consequently, it is imperative that members plan ahead and register early in the event that registrations have to be taken at a first-come, first-served basis.
